Jewellery With Meaning: Why the Best Pieces Tell a Story

Jewellery With Meaning: Why the Best Pieces Tell a Story

There’s jewellery you wear because it goes with your outfit. And then there’s the jewellery you’d be absolutely gutted to lose.

Usually, those are the pieces with a story behind them.

It might be a necklace someone gave you for a birthday, a ring you bought yourself after something brilliant happened, or a bangle that reminds you of a particular person or place. It doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive or saved for special occasions. In fact, quite often it’s the piece you wear every single day.

At Lucy Kemp Jewellery, that’s one of the things we love most about making jewellery — knowing that once a piece leaves us, it starts becoming part of somebody else’s story.

Jewellery doesn’t need a special occasion

We’re big believers in buying jewellery just because you love it.

You don’t need to wait for a birthday, anniversary or Christmas, and you definitely don’t need to wait for somebody else to buy it for you.

Sometimes a new pair of earrings is simply a little treat after a rubbish week. Sometimes a ring marks a big achievement. And sometimes you spot something, can’t stop thinking about it and decide it was clearly meant to be yours.

Those pieces can end up meaning just as much as the ones wrapped up and given to us.

Make it personal

Personalised jewellery takes that idea one step further.

An initial, a name, a word or something that means absolutely nothing to anyone except the person wearing it can turn a simple piece of jewellery into something completely individual.

And that’s what makes personalised pieces such lovely gifts too. Rather than choosing something simply because it looks nice, you can choose something that says I saw this and thought of you.

Those are usually the presents people remember.

Little symbols, big meanings

Jewellery has always been full of symbols.

Hearts might be the obvious one, but stars, moons, flowers and other little motifs can all have their own meaning depending on who’s wearing them.

The lovely thing is that there doesn’t have to be an official explanation. A piece can mean whatever you want it to mean.

Sometimes the story behind a piece is far more important than the piece itself.

Handmade in Cornwall

There’s something special about knowing that your jewellery has been made by a real person rather than rolling off a huge production line.

Our jewellery is handmade in Cornwall, and the little differences and marks that come with the making process are part of what makes each piece individual.

Your jewellery has already had a journey before it reaches you — and hopefully you’ll add plenty more chapters to it afterwards.

We make jewellery to be worn, mixed, stacked, loved and lived in. Not hidden away waiting for the “right” occasion.

The beginning of gifting season...

October is usually when the first Christmas thoughts start creeping in.

We’re not talking full Christmas panic just yet. But lists start appearing, somebody mentions they’ve already finished their shopping (there’s always one), and the annual question begins:

What do you buy someone who doesn’t need more stuff?

Our answer probably won’t surprise you.

Choose something they’ll wear. Something that reminds you of them. Something personal. Something handmade.

Something that will still mean something long after Christmas morning.

Because the best jewellery isn’t necessarily the biggest, shiniest or most expensive piece.

It’s the one that has a story attached to it.

And sometimes, you’re there right at the beginning of that story. ❤️
